Admission to the study programmes offered by
the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz –
terms and conditions
In order to test the artistic gifting and level of competence of candidates pursuing tertiary education at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music, entrance examinations are competitive in character and, depending on the principal study programme, may consist of:
a practical examination;
an examination in complementary music-related subjects;
written and oral examinations in selected principal-study-programme-related issues.
Full-Time Programmes
The Faculty of Composition, Theory of Music and Sound Engineering
Principal study programme: Composition and Theory of Music
Specialization: Composition (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. a) presentation of two pieces of music written by the candidate who may select the instrumentation;
b) examinations in ear training and functional harmony (written and oral);
c) oral examination in music forms and styles;
2. performance of a previously prepared piano programme.
Principal study programme: Composition and Theory of Music
Specialization: Composition (two-year, 2nd (M. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. presentation of two compositions written by the candidate (for chamber ensemble; one of the pieces must have the cyclic form);
2. oral examination in 20th-century composition techniques.
Admission to the entrance examination is granted upon prior submission of the diploma of completion of a 1st-degree programme. The compliance of the diploma with the principal study programme and specialization chosen by the candidate shall be approved by the Faculty Council.
Principal study programme: Composition and Theory of Music
Specialization: Theory of Music (three-year, 1st (BA-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. a) examinations in ear training (written and oral – ability to recognize music structures: melodic and harmonic flows, and metric and rhythmic arrangements);
b) examinations in functional harmony (written and oral);
c) examinations in music forms and styles (written and oral);
2. performance of a previously prepared piano programme.
Principal study programme: Composition and Theory of Music
Specialization: Theory of Music (two-year, 2nd (MA-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. a) examinations in functional harmony (written and oral);
b) oral examination in 20th-century composition techniques;
2. critical analysis of a musical composition – its form and style in the historical and aesthetic context (written and oral examinations).
Admission to the entrance examination is granted upon prior submission of the diploma of completion of a 1st-degree programme. The compliance of the diploma with the principal study programme and specialization chosen by the candidate shall be approved by the Faculty Council.
Principal study programme: Sound Engineering (three-year, 1st (BA-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. a) examinations in ear training and harmony – the written examination shall comprise dictations (in melody and harmony, including pieces written from memory), error correction of a piece of music and melody harmonization, whereas the oral examination shall comprise the loud reading of notes, recognition of chord types and harmonic connections, performance of cadences, progressions and modulations;
b) examinations in physics and mathematics – the written examination shall comprise tasks at the level of secondary comprehensive school, whereas the oral examination shall cover the following: trigonometry, description of the properties of a function, sets of equations and inequalities, trigonometrical equations, the calculus of probability, physical units, mechanics, optics, acoustics, and electricity;
c) performance of a previously prepared programme for an instrument approved by the Dean’s Office.
Candidates who sat the old secondary school final examinations (Polish: egzamin dojrzałości) are required to take part 1 b) of the entrance examination. Other candidates should take mathematics or physics and astronomy in their secondary school final examinations (Polish: egzamin maturalny), the results of one of the above examinations being converted into points as stipulated in the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music admission regulations.
2. oral test in the subject of the principal study programme – examining the candidate’s suitability to the profession of a sound engineer, his or her imagination and sensitivity to sound and tone quality, and his or her general knowledge of music, film, theatre, radio, and musical recordings.
Important: candidates who would like to pursue the sound engineering study programme are subject to audiometric tests.
The Faculty of Instrumental Music
Principal study programme: Instrumental Music
Specialization: Instrumental Music (musical instrument of choice) (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programmes)
The entrance examination shall consist of three parts:
1. thirty-minute-long (minimum) presentation should include instrumental repertoire at the level of a 2nd degree music school diploma examination and consist of compositions representing various periods, forms and styles; the repertoire shall be performed from memory;
2. a) examination in sight-reading;
b) presentation of the level of mastery and interpretation of a composition prepared within 30 minutes;
c) written and an oral examinations in ear training;
d) examination in improvisation (for candidates for the Organ specialization);
3. oral principal-study-programme-related examination in culture studies.
Principal study programme: Instrumental Music
Specialization: Instrumental Music (musical instrument of choice) (two-year, 2nd (M. Mus.-equivalent) programmes)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. presentation of a recital;
2. interview.
Admission to the entrance examination is granted upon prior submission of the diploma of completion of a 1st-degree programme. The compliance of the diploma with the principal study programme and specialization chosen by the candidate shall be approved by the Faculty Council.
The Faculty of Vocal Music and Drama
Principal study programme: Vocal Music
Specializations:
1. Vocal Music and Drama (four-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
2. Oratorio and Art Song (four-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of three parts:
1. presentation of a minimum of four works, including one piece in Polish (rendered from memory and with piano accompaniment);
2. presentation of drama skills – a passage of prose and a poem recited from memory within three minutes. The candidate shall select two pieces representing different styles. This part of the examination also tests the candidate’s aural skills, music memory and his/ her sense of rhythm.
3. oral principal-study-programme-related examination in culture studies.
Important: Candidates shall be subject to phoniatric tests.
Principal study programme: Vocal Music
Specializations:
1. Vocal Music and Drama (two-year, 2nd (M. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
2. Oratorio and Art Song (two-year, 2nd (M. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. presentation of a semi-recital;
2. interview.
Admission to the entrance examination is granted upon prior submission of the diploma of completion of a 1st-degree programme. The compliance of the diploma with the principal study programme and specialization chosen by the candidate shall be approved by the Faculty Council.
The Faculty of Choir Conducting and Music Education
Principal study programme: Conducting
Specialization: Symphony and Opera Conducting (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of three parts:
1. a) examination in conducting the performance of a selected composition;
b) written examination in ear training;
2. presentation of a selected composition for piano or other musical instrument;
3. oral principal-study-programme-related examination in culture studies.
Principal study programme: Artistic Education in Music
Specializations:
1. Conducting Vocal and Vocal-Instrumental Ensembles (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
2. Conducting Jazz and Popular Music Ensembles (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
3. School Music Education (three-year, 1st (BA-equivalent) degree programme)
4. Church Music (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of three parts:
1. oral test of the candidate’s manual, vocal, and aural skills;
2. a) examination in an instrumental or vocal presentation of a selected piece of music (candidates who would like to pursue the Conducting Jazz and Popular Music Ensembles specialization shall use elements of improvisation in their performance);
b) examination in piano playing;
3. oral principal-study-programme-related examination in culture studies.
Principal study programme: Artistic Education in Music
Specializations:
1. Conducting Vocal and Vocal-Instrumental Ensembles (two-year, 2nd (M.Mus.-equivalent) degree programmes)
2. Conducting Jazz and Popular Music Ensembles (two-year, 2nd (M. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
3. School Music Education (two-year, 2nd (MA-equivalent) degree programme)
4. Church Music (two-year, 2nd (M. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. examinations in conducting and, as chosen, voice production/ presentation of an instrumental piece;
2. interview.
Admission to the entrance examination is granted upon prior submission of the diploma of completion of a 1st-degree programme. The compliance of the diploma with the principal study programme and specialization chosen by the candidate shall be approved by the Faculty Council.
Part-time programmes
The Faculty of Choir Conducting and Music Education
Principal study programme: Artistic Education in Music
Specialization: Conducting Jazz and Popular Music Ensembles (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of three parts:
1. oral test of the candidate’s manual, vocal, and aural skills;
2. instrumental or vocal presentation of a selected composition with elements of improvisation;
3. oral principal-study-programme-related examination in culture studies.
Principal study programme: Artistic Education in Music
Specialization: Church Music (three-year, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programme)
The entrance examination shall consist of three parts:
1. oral test of the candidate’s manual, vocal, and aural skills;
2. examination in piano or organ playing;
3. oral principal-study-programme-related examination in culture studies.
Important: part-time, 1st (B. Mus.-equivalent) degree programmes are subject to tuition fees which shall be announced by the Rector in June of a given admission year. The number of candidates shall be the precondition for launching a particular study programme.
Postgraduate programmes
Doctoral Studies in Instrumental Music
Candidates for doctoral studies shall submit the following documents to the deadline specified by the Academy:
diploma of completion of a five-year or 2nd degree, M. Mus.-equivalent, programme in instrumental music and the specialization they would like to pursue for the doctorate;
curriculum vitae with a list of confirmed significant artistic achievements;
certificate of completion of a teacher training course and description of teaching practice if the candidate has worked as an academic teacher;
description of the subject and outline of the doctoral dissertation the candidate would like to advance during their doctoral studies. The subject of the dissertation shall reflect the candidate’s academic interests.
The entrance examination shall consist of two parts:
1. recital of about 45 minutes, including compositions related to the subject of the doctoral thesis;
2. interview covering the following:
subject of the dissertation the candidate would like to advance in their doctoral studies;
manner of obtaining sources to pursue the aforesaid subject;
regulations governing the implementation of the procedure for registering and conferring a doctoral degree.
The examination shall be competitive in character. The admission shall be based on the fulfilment of the above conditions and the number of points granted for particular parts of the examination. The limit to the number of admissible students shall be stipulated in a relevant directive issued by the Rector. The Faculty Examination Committee shall be empowered to decide about the admission of candidates to the doctoral programme.
Postgraduate Instrumental Music Programme
The entrance examination shall consist of a public performance of a semi-recital of compositions representing various periods. The Academy shall provide accompanists.
Candidates shall submit the following:
diploma of completion of an M. Mus.-equivalent programme in instrumental music and a relevant specialization (foreign nationals and Polish graduates of foreign universities shall present a diploma of completion of relevant studies in music);
confirmation of artistic achievements;
recording of the programme performed in the examination (foreign candidates);
completed application form;
3 cm x 4 cm photograph;
photocopy of the ID card;
receipt of payment for the entrance examination (fees shall be announced annually by the Rector).
Candidates shall be informed about their admission in writing. Postgraduate programmes are subject to tuition fees. The documents shall be sent to the Academy’s postal address.
Postgraduate Vocal Music Programme
The entrance examination shall consist of a public performance of a semi-recital of compositions representing various periods. The Academy shall provide accompanists.
Candidates shall submit the following:
diploma of completion of an M. Mus.-equivalent programme in vocal music and the vocal music and drama/ oratorio and art song specialization (foreign nationals and Polish graduates of foreign universities shall present a diploma of completion of relevant studies in music);
confirmation of artistic achievements;
recording of the programme performed in the examination (foreign candidates);
completed application form;
photocopy of the ID card;
3 cm x 4 cm photograph;
receipt of payment for the entrance examination (fees shall be announced annually by the Rector).
Candidates shall be informed about their admission in writing. Postgraduate programmes are subject to tuition fees. The documents shall be sent to the Academy’s postal address.
Postgraduate Choirmaster Programme
Postgraduate Voice Production and Training Programme
Candidates shall submit the following:
diploma of completion of an MA/ M. Mus.-equivalent programme in artistic education in music/ musicology (or any other principal study programme offered by a higher school of music);
recording of the programme performed in the examination (foreign candidates);
completed application form;
two 3 cm x 4 cm photographs;
photocopy of the ID card;
receipt of payment for the entrance examination (fees shall be announced annually by the Rector).
Candidates shall be informed about their admission in writing. Postgraduate programmes are subject to tuition fees. The documents shall be sent to the Academy’s postal address.
Early Music Programme
Admission to the Early Music Programme takes place during the summer examination session in June. The practical examination in the subject of the principal study programme shall consist of a 20-minute presentation. The selection of repertoire shall reflect the musical education of candidates. The presentation shall be evaluated by an examination committee appointed by the Dean.
Candidates shall submit completed application forms addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Instrumental Music.
Candidates who would like to pursue the programme, for which the payment of a tuition fee is required, shall submit the following documents:
curriculum vitae containing information about their music education;
photocopies of diplomas or certified copies of certificates confirming the completion of particular cycles of music education;
receipt of payment for the entrance examination.
The limit to the number of students admitted to pursue the Early Music Programme shall be specified by the Rector.
Jazz and Popular Music Programme
Admission to the Jazz and Popular Music Programme takes place during the summer examination session in June. The practical examination in the subject of the principal study programme shall consist of a 20-minute performance with elements of improvisation. The selection of repertoire shall reflect the musical education of candidates. The performance shall be evaluated by an examination committee appointed by the Dean.
Candidates shall submit completed application forms addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Choir Conducting and Music Education.
Candidates who would like to pursue the programme, for which the payment of a tuition fee is required, shall submit the following documents:
curriculum vitae containing information about their music education;
photocopies of diplomas or certified copies of certificates confirming the completion of particular cycles of music education;
receipt of payment for the entrance examination.
The limit to the number of students admitted to pursue the Jazz and Popular Music Programme shall be specified annually by the Rector.
Admission of foreign nationals
Regulations concerning the admission of foreign nationals to full-time, postgraduate or art internship programmes are specified in the Act of 27th July 2005, the Higher Education Law, and the regulations issued by the Bureau of Academic Recognition and International Exchange. Applications and documents confirming the completion of music education compliant with the selected principal study programme shall be submitted at the consulates of the Republic of Poland or directly at the Academy. Regulations concerning the payment of tuition fees are governed by a relevant directive and international agreements.
